“Casa Palopó has great lake views from its room and luxury touches like a helipad and a fabulous restaurant. From here, it’s easy get out and explore (check out the villages of San Antonio Palopó and Santa Catarina Palopó; in both, you’ll see plenty of traditional life and beautiful examples of local textiles). “La Lancha is owned by Francis Ford Coppola, so naturally it has some clout. It’s one of the more upscale spots in El Petén and offers a really beautiful jungle and lakeside setting. The restaurant, which serves Guatemalan fare, is pretty tasty. You can’t beat the wine list; plan on splurging on a good bottle of red or white.” (Julieta Martínez, travel specialist)

“Casa Santo Domingo is great for families because it has interconnecting rooms, an on-site restaurant, beautiful grounds, a pool, and even its own museums and galleries. Make sure you leave time in your itinerary to really enjoy the hotel itself, since there is so much to do!” (Stephanie García, sales manager)

“Hotel Atitlán offers something for both adults and kids. It’s in a great location, right on the lake with wonderful views of the water and volcanoes. Adults will appreciate the large gardens, pleasant outdoor dining area, and the cozy bar, which has a large fireplace (it can get chilly in winter!). Kids will love the pool and nearby nature reserve with ziplining. You can take a boat right from the property to explore the lake and its villages, which is convenient. The hotel is also a short but fun tuktuk ride from Panajachel, where Circus Bar has great pizza, pasta, and live music.” (Becky Harris, Viaventure co-director)

El Petén—“Camino Real Tikal has lots of activities that are ideal for families with kids. There’s plenty to do to keep active. You can feed the fish, kayak, take the hotel’s catamaran out for a sail, or go for a hike. Try to spend at least one day at the hotel to enjoy all the onsite fun.” (David Farrington, travel specialist)

“Hotel Sor Juana is pretty new. It’s a small B&B with only five rooms, but the price is really excellent for what’s offered. The rooms are spread out, so you don’t feel like you’re on top of anyone, but it’s still nice for small families or couples traveling together. There’s a beautiful terrace with spectacular views where you can eat breakfast. The owner is very keyed into making people’s experience the best he can and is usually at the hotel to take care of guests.” (Stephanie García, sales manager)

At Posada de Santiago , you get your own spacious cottage in a lovely garden setting with views of Lake Atitlán and San Pedro volcano. The rates are great, and the quality of the food and service is excellent. The owners, David and Susan Glanville, have lived at this area for decades and are real community activists, supporting all manner of local development projects. Be sure to find time to head into town (catch a ride in the back of a pickup truck) to take part in a ceremony with Maximón, the drinking, smoking Maya god who can grant you more or less anything.” (Becky Harris, Viaventure co-director)

“Casona del Lago has good rooms and a nice swimming pool, a restaurant with a fresh ambiance, and great views of Lake Petén Itzá. Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw from the town of Flores. Stroll into town to see some local life. Find a spot for drinks and dinner and watch the sunset over the lake.” (Kevin García, travel specialist)

“Posada del Angel The hotel is small and intimate with wonderfully friendly staff that really make an effort to personalize everything. Stay in the Rose Suite, and they’ll bring you breakfast on your small, private terrace. It’s a lovely experience with a beautiful view.” Stephanie García (sales manager)

“Bolontiku is a brand new hotel, so while I can’t call it my favorite just yet, it’s on the path for that! The property features a prime location and all rooms having a view of Lake Petén Itzá. Mouthwatering dishes are served and made with regional produce.
