Carving a New Creative Path in Antigua
Just off one of Antigua Guatemala‘s bustling cobblestone streets, tucked inside a bright and welcoming studio, we found something unexpected: a creative space where traditional printmaking is thriving.
Utopia Antigua is more than just an art studio—it’s the realization of a dream. After years in the fast-paced world of advertising, Jacobo and Andrea sought something more meaningful, a place where art could exist for its own sake. In April of this year, they opened their doors on 5th Avenida Sur, filling the space with paints, brushes, fine papers, and endless creative energy. At the heart of their offerings is xilografía, a centuries-old printmaking technique that involves carving designs into wood, inking the surface, and pressing it onto paper. The process is both meditative and hands-on, requiring patience, precision, and a willingness to embrace imperfection. Under the guidance of skilled artists, visitors can try their hand at this craft, creating their own prints to take home as a reminder of their time in Antigua.
Xilografía has been quietly making a resurgence across Latin America, and in Antigua, Utopia is leading the way. It’s a space where tradition meets innovation, where anyone—from seasoned artists to those who have never picked up a carving tool—can find joy in the simple act of making something by hand.
Whether you’re an art lover, a curious traveler, or just someone looking to spend an afternoon doing something different, Utopia’s xilografía experience offers a chance to slow down, connect with the creative process, and take home a piece of Antigua’s artistic spirit.
