Press Release from Belize Tourism Board follows below:

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO STAKEHOLDERS IN PLACENCIA

Placencia Airstrip Upgrade Project

The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) wishes to inform tourism stakeholders on the Placencia Peninsula, that the ongoing Placencia Airstrip Upgrade Project is slated for completion by 30th September 2020 – just in time for the start of the 2020 tourism high season.  The Airstrip upgrade will result in a longer, wider runway, complete with lights and international standards marking. The good news is that this upgrade will facilitate night flights, enabling stakeholders to receive guests even when international flights arrive late in the evenings.

In an effort to expedite the comprehensive works required to complete the project and to meet the proposed completion date, the Belize Airports Authority (BAA) has advised the BTB that it will be necessary for the Placencia Airstrip to be temporarily closed from May 1st, 2020 to September 30th, 2020.

In order to minimize inconveniences during this closure, the BTB has initiated discussions with the relevant authorities to determine the possibility of having air transfer available from other nearby airstrips. Such information will be made available to you as soon as a decision is made. Transfer of guests via road will, of course remain a viable option during this closure period. The BTB hereby encourages you to begin to examine your individual needs and capabilities, to determine the best possible solution that will minimize the impact of this closure on your guest experience.

The BTB will continue to provide updates on the airstrip upgrade project and the corresponding temporary closure as these become available.  We thank you for your continued patience and support and look forward to this much needed upgraded Placencia Airstrip.

Yours in Tourism,

Belize Tourism Board
