If you’re planning a honeymoon, there’s a very good chance that some of the best trip-planning advice you’ll receive is from former honeymooners themselves, particularly couples who have done exactly what you have in mind. Knowing that, we reached out to Viaventure client, Melissa Campbell from San Diego, California, to find out what she and her husband, Jerry, loved—and would change—about their own 9-day Belize honeymoon. Their trip included a mix of adventure (they visited the Caracol ruins, explored caves by foot and inner-tube, and snorkeled with sharks) and relaxing beach time and was rounded out with stays at top resorts like jungle lodge Chaa Creek and beachfront resort Matachica. Here’s what Melissa had to share:
What made you choose Belize for your honeymoon? We really liked that some of our honeymoon could be adventurous and some of it could be spent lying on a beach.
What area of Belize did you like best? We loved the jungle! There were so many opportunities for adventure and our hotel, Chaa Creek, was relaxing and serene.
Which tour did you enjoy most? We absolutely loved the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave adventure. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it and was a bit scared at the beginning, but it was amazing. Once inside, it was so cool to navigate through the rocks and water and see ancient Maya artifacts.
Did you have a favorite hotel? Chaa Creek was amazing—just a perfect hotel for a honeymoon couple. The food was delicious, the rooms were immaculate, and the staff was great. We loved sitting outside at the bar and having drinks at night. I only wish we had known how much the hotel had to offer beforehand. We booked quite a few tours, so we didn’t have too much time to just relax there. I would highly recommend guests leave some time to explore the property—it’s absolutely beautiful.
What tips would you share with future Belize honeymooners? Don’t overbook yourselves. There are so many great options for activities but make sure to leave time to relax and enjoy your hotel, too.
We loved that all of our tours were private; it was definitely worth the extra money. Everything was set up prior to our arrival, so we would literally just show up at the entrance of our hotel and be picked up for that day’s tour. It’s nice to be with just your husband or wife on your honeymoon, too, instead part of a large group tour.
Is there anything that you would have done differently? Make our trip longer! We were in Belize for 9 days, and it was actually the perfect amount of time, but we would have been happy to stay longer! Also, if we were to travel there, again, I think we would try to stay a bit closer to San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye. We loved our hotel, Matachica, but the water taxis only depart at certain times and take about 30 minutes to get you to and from town.
Could you share one of your most memorable moments? There are too many! Some include exploring incredible caves and Maya ruins, laying in the hammock outside of our bungalow in Ambergris Caye, and enjoying outdoor cocktails at Chaa Creek, surrounded by the jungle!
