San Jorge La Laguna is a small Kaqchiquel town located in the hills above Lake Atitlán, about a 10-minute drive from Panajachel, the region’s main hub. In addition to spectacular views of the lake and three volcanoes nearby, San Jorge has a rich indigenous culture. Beginning in 2013, Viaventure will offer visitors the chance to get an insider’s look at this community with the help of a local guide. Over the course of a half-day, visitors will explore San Jorge’s small streets and colonial church, learn more about the ropa típica (traditional dress), take a short hike to a series of caves regularly used for sacred Mayan ceremonies, and enjoy a traditional, homemade lunch (guests will learn how to make Guatemala’s ubiquitous corn tortillas) in the house of a local family.
