A 9-day Trip of Honduran Highlights
If you’re traveling to Honduras and looking for a trip that combines ruins, rainforests, and reefs, this 9-day itinerary will more than fit the bill. In just over a week, you’ll visit the Copán archaeological site and surrounding attractions, explore the wild and remote Pico Bonito National Park, and get to know Honduras’s beach and barrier reef.
Day 1:
You’ll arrive in the city San Pedro Sula and transfer to the quaint, colonial town of Copán Ruinas where you’ll have the afternoon to explore.
Day 2:
You’ll take a privately guided tour of the Copán ruins. This World Heritage Site was one of the ancient Maya’s most lavish cultural centers and is well-known for its magnificently carved stelae and hieroglyphic stairway. After exploring the ruins, you’ll travel to the Macaw Mountain Bird Park, a reserve for rescued and endangered scarlet macaws, keel-billed toucans, and other tropical birds. You’ll learn about the park’s on-going projects and interact with some feathered friends, too.
Day 3:
You’ll learn about Honduran farm life at the century-old, family-run Finca El Cisne. Here, you’ll set out by horse to explore the Copán valley countryside and learn about cattle ranching, coffee, and cardamom. You’ll also enjoy a hearty farmhouse lunch and have the opportunity to take a dip in the local hot springs.
Day 4:
You’ll travel by car to San Pedro Sula for a flight to the coastal city of La Ceiba. From here, you’ll transfer by car to the area of Pico Bonito National Park.
Day 5:
You can choose from a variety of wildlife- and adventure-packed adventures: Take an exhilarating white water rafting trip, tour the Cuero y Salado park by boat (it’s home to manatees, monkeys, and alligators), or horseback ride along the Caribbean coast.
Day 6:
You’ll start your day with an early morning hike through Pico Bonito National Park. Afterwards, you’ll transfer to La Ceiba and fly to the Bay Island of Roatán.
Day 7 & 8:
Spend these days relaxing on Roatan’s white-sand beaches, fishing the Caribbean’s turquoise waters, snorkeling and scuba diving along the world’s second-largest barrier reef, or exploring the island itself.
Day 9:
You’ll transfer to the airport to return home.
